Life’s Little Things one year on.

Happy New Year everyone! It’s that time of year again, a time for promises, resolutions & fresh starts. It’s a day that brings new hope that we can make amazing things happen & change our lives for the better. It has been exactly a whole year since I first launched Life’s Little Things (you can read my first blog post here) & what a year it has been! So how is Life’s Little Things one year on?

I have loved creating content for Life’s Little Things over the past year. To be able to write positive, encouraging & happy content has been absolutely wonderful. The later part of the year has been a struggle to find time to write new blog posts, but the New Year has brought with it fresh optimism! I am really looking forward to 2022 & bringing you more new inspiring content. As well as writing blog posts this year, I have also set up some social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram & Pinterest to share more regular content including weekly motivational quotes. You can check out some collections of my ‘Quotes to live by’ below.

Alongside creating my website & social media content over the last year, I have also been working on other projects. Back in the first part of the year I made a major purchase for the business & bought a Cricut Machine. It is a brilliant piece of equipment that will be vital in helping me create my products & packaging. So far I have used it to create some environmentally friendly packaging for a lovely friend of mine & her craft business. I have also been working on & designing environmentally friendly products to sell on Life’s Little Things. Hopefully they will be ready to go on sale at some point in 2022, so watch this space!

Life’s Little Things brings you some Autumn Appreciation

Despite the weather turning really cold over the last few weeks, it is actually still Autumn. The leaves have turned beautiful shades of red and orange. The evenings have gotten darker and cooler. I have already written blog posts about Spring & Summer, so what better theme for a short and sweet blog post this month than Life’s Little Things brings you some Autumn Appreciation.

Beautiful fallen Autumn Leaves

The trees are turning red & orange
The trees are turning red & orange

There is so much I love about Autumn. When I finish work in the evenings, the air is feeling cooler, crisper & cleaner. Everything seems a lot quieter as people are spending less time in their gardens in the evening. The smell of log fires is getting stronger & when the weather is nice enough I watch the sun set in a beautiful pastel rainbow sky. The kids seem to really be appreciating Autumn a lot more this year & have found a new favourite game to play on their way home from school. Grabbing piles of leaves & throwing them at each other & me! I do like this time of year, as its not too hot & not too cold. The lush green leaves have nearly disappeared & the trees are getting more bare. The excitement of Halloween & Bonfire night has been & gone, but now Christmas is buzzing in the air.

I am looking forward to eating warmer, more hearty meals as Autumn moves into Winter. Keep your eyes peeled for my next blog post coming soon, which will be an Autumnal recipe that will keep you toasty as the weather gets colder. In the mean time keep an eye on my other social media channels, Facebook, Instagram & Pinterest, for more frequent posts. Enjoy the rest of Autumn.

Take care.

5 little things to help our planets palm oil problem

There has been a lot in the news over the past few months about climate change and extreme weather that some parts of the world have been experiencing. There are many many things that contribute to climate change, but the one I want to talk about in this post is our planets palm oil problem. Palm oil is a vegetable oil, harvested from the fruit of trees grown in Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America. It is added into many household items for a variety of reasons. But do you know the amount of damage palm oil production does to our planet?

Due to its high demand, rainforests are being destroyed at astonishing rates. This plays a large role in millions of tonnes of greenhouse gasses entering our atmosphere which contributes to climate change. Indigenous people are being pushed from their homes and there are reports of worker and child exploitation of labour. Animal habitats are being destroyed and species are being pushed to the brink of extinction. What can we do about it, I hear you ask? Well, Life’s Little Things brings you 5 little things to help with our planets palm oil problem.

5 little things to help our planets palm oil problem
5 little things to help our planets palm oil problem

1. Choose foods without palm oil

It is estimated that 50% of packaged food in Supermarkets contains palm oil. Thats pretty shocking! It is in everything from spreads, to biscuits to pizza! It is used in things like margarine and peanut butter to give a spreadable consistency. Other foods use it to help with expiration dates. One of the quickest and easiest ways to help reduce the demand for palm oil, therefore reducing the amount of devastation to our planet, is to buy products that do not contain palm oil. More and more palm oil free products are appearing on our shelves and can be great alternatives. One shop that is going the extra mile is Iceland. They have removed palm oil from all their own brand products!

Some products claim to use sustainable palm oil. Now, depending on what website you go to, you will get different opinions on whether sustainable palm oil is good enough. Generally, the opinion of sustainable palm oil is that it is better than unsustainable palm oil. However, it doesn’t go far enough in protecting from deforestation, protecting animals and protecting livelihoods. The best way to make an impact on palm oil production is to avoid buying products with palm oil in.

2. Choose cosmetics without palm oil

It’s not just food that can use palm oil, but many cosmetics such as shampoo, lipstick and soap also have it in. It can be a little trickier when looking at what cosmetics contain it as it will not be listed as palm oil. Instead its chemical name, such as Sodium Laureth Sulphate or Palmitoyl Oxostearamide, will be listed. An excellent website to check out for lists of palm oil free products is ethical consumer.org. They have a huge list of palm oil free products including cosmetics, food and even cleaning products.

Orangutan are on brink of extinction due to palm oil demand.

3. Check how your shops and brands rank on scorecards

There are a few different places online that you can check scoring systems for your favourite brands and shops to see how ethical they are and their stance on palm oil. The WWF website has a scorecard that rates manufacturers, retailers and food services out of 22. Here you can check out the latest list for 2020 in PDF format or check 2019 and earlier scores on their website.

4. Contact brands that use palm oil

Something you could do to take things even further is to contact a brand about their products. Tell them how you feel about the use of palm oil in their products. About the destruction and damage it is causing and how things need to change. The more brands hear that their customers are not happy that they use palm oil, the more they will realise that they need to change to help our planets palm oil problem.

Deforestation palm oil fact.
Areas of rainforest, the size of 300 football pitches are estimated to be cleared every hour due to the demand for palm oil.

5. Share information with your friends and family

Just sharing information with your friends and family about why they should try to avoid products with palm oil or at least cut down on products with palm oil is a great help. You could tell them about any product swaps you have made and that you like. You could also share ideas on how you could use palm oil products less.

Over the coming weeks I will post some changes that we make at home to things we buy and swaps we make to palm oil free products, so keep an eye on my Instagram and Facebook pages! Feel free to share any tips or products that you have found to help our planets palm oil problem! If you would like some more information on little things you can do to help our planet, you can also check out some of my previous posts, 5 little things we can all do to help the environment and 5 little things we can all do for Earth Day 2021. If everyone made lots of little changes wherever they could, a big impact could be made that would greatly help our planet.

5 little things for a happy hygge Summer!

Hey everyone! It feels like forever since I last wrote a blog post, but it’s only been a month! It is so nice to be back writing though. Since my last post we have officially entered into Summer! Woohoo! One of my favourite posts from the beginning of the year was about Hygge. (If you missed it, you can check it out here!) I love hygge in Winter, but how can you get your hygge on in Summer? Life’s little things brings you 5 little things for a happy hygge Summer!

What is hygge again?

Hygge, is the Danish way of life, where people surround themselves with simple things that bring them the most comfort and contentment. It’s normally associated with Winter, but hygge is totally achievable in Summer, just not in the same ways as Winter! Hygge is about creating happiness from the most simple things in life like the food we eat, the company we keep, a cosy, comfortable setting and being present in the moment to see, smell and really feel what is all around you.

1. BBQ

The number 1 thing I look forward to every Summer is BBQs! Whether it’s a small impromptu BBQ or a larger gathering with family & friends, I love them! Hearing the sizzle of the BBQ & that glorious smell of the food cooking. There is just something about cooking and eating food outside that makes me so happy. Apart from the delicious food, I love BBQs with friends & family as it’s more of an event, where everyone comes together & relaxes & chats & enjoys eachothers company. Whats not hygge about a good bbq?!

2. Family picnics

Sticking with the theme of eating outside, somethings else that brings me a lot of hygge happiness in Summer is a good family picnic. I love preparing & packing up our favourite treats, then heading out to somewhere like a beach, a park or a woods. Again, what is it about enjoying food outside that makes it so much more fun? I wonder if it is because when eating lunch in your home, you are surrounded by all the jobs & chores you have to do as soon as you finish eating? Being outside away from your normal humdrum lunch environment just allows you to relax, enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and the sights & sounds around you.

3. Growing & eating fruit & veg

Food again! This year we have had a go at growing our own vegetables in the garden & I have loved it! I am not naturally green fingered, so the fact that I have managed to grow anything is a miracle. I have enjoyed watering the plants everyday & seeing them grow. Its felt like quite an exciting achievement. In the last week, we (especially the kids) have been so excited that things have finally been ready to start picking & eating. It has been so wonderfully comforting & has brought a lot of happiness to pick & eat something we have grown ourselves. I highly recommend giving it a go!

Little seedlings!
All planted & growing.
Peas, carrots & onions!

4. Relaxing in the sunshine

In Summer, on those odd occasions I have a spare half an hour to myself, I love grabbing a blanket, a good book (and don’t forget that sun cream!), then finding a lovely sunny spot to relax in while I read or listen to some music or just close my eyes & listen to the (hopefully) peaceful surroundings. I love warming up in the sunshine, and just listening to the birds singing, the breeze rustling through the trees. Peace and quite. A wonderfully hygge way to slow down & be present in the world and the moment.

5. Stargazing

I think this is probably the most hygge of the 5. On a lovely clear night, what better thing is there to do than snuggle up under a blanket & gaze up at the beautiful starry night sky. While enjoying a starry night, maybe you could have a fire pit, make s’mores & drink hot chocolate or maybe just light some candles or switch on some warm glow fairy lights to create the perfectly cosy and comforting hygge outdoor space. Perfect!

I hope you all enjoy your Summer, whatever you get up to. Don’t forget to take notice of the little things in life, they are all around you! See you in a month for another post from Life’s Little Things! For more posts in the meantime check out my Facebook, Instagram & Pinterest accounts.

Life’s Little Things, 6 months on

Wow! I can’t believe that it has been 6 months since I posted my first blog post and this is my 13th! I have covered all sorts of topics in my posts so far, but for this special 6 month milestone I wanted to give a little update of where the business is at and what is coming up next for Life’s Little Things. So, here is Life’s Little Things, 6 months on.

So how is the happiness blog going?

I have to say, I am REALLY enjoying writing the blog! I am loving creating a range of positive and informative posts, from recipes, to environmental posts. It is great to be putting something happy and helpful out there for people to (hopefully) enjoy. Not only have I been writing blog posts but every Monday I also post a motivational or inspirational quote over on my Life’s Little Thing’s Instagram and Facebook pages. I love putting these little rays of sunshine up every Monday. I know they certainly help pick me up at the start of the week and help put me in a better frame of mind for the week ahead. (If you haven’t seen them, you can check out my motivational quotes in 9 quotes to live by – Part 1 and 9 quotes to live by – Part 2)

A couple of months ago I also launched Life’s Little Things onto Pinterest. I have loved Pinterest for many years, so was excited to use it to not only add my own content to but to also pin some amazing content from other people. I have all sorts saved over there from boards about happiness and mindfulness to our planet and the environment. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can view it here and give it a follow.

While I am loving creating my blog content, now that the business side of things is moving forward I am finding it very time consuming doing a post every 2 weeks and am not getting enough time to work on the products I want to create. So, for now, I am going to start doing blog posts once a month to give me more time to focus on the business side of Life’s Little Things.

So, what is going on with the environmentally friendly craft business?

As I explained in my first 2 blog posts, (Happy New Year and Welcome and A little bit about me) as well as the blog, I also want to create an environmentally friendly craft business. I’ve been doing lots of research over the last 6 months about starting up a craft business. One book in particular thats helped me get too grips with all I need to do is Making and Marketing a Successful Art and Craft Business by Fiona Pullen. I can’t recommend this book enough for anyone looking to start up a craft business. It is absolutely jam packed full of so much information from the legal and financial side to running a website and social media. While it doesn’t go very in-depth on any of the subjects, it has a ton of useful links available throughout should you want to find out more information about something specific.

An exciting development happened a few weeks ago when I purchased a Cricut Maker, which is the machine that I will be using to create many of my products. I’ll admit, it’s not been all plain sailing with the Cricut and I have a lot still to learn about it but I am slowly getting there. I am doing loads of designing and developing of my ideas for products that I want to launch. I have also been researching what environmentally friendly materials I can use with it and experimenting with designs. Watch this space for exciting things to come!

So what’s next?

I was hoping to have already started selling things by now but time just runs away when you are running around after 2 kids, working and trying to start a business! Things have taken a little longer than I thought but I am certainly no less enthusiastic about getting my products out there. Every week I am making progress and I’m hoping to have some things on sale before Christmas. I hope you have all been enjoying the content I have been creating and will stick with me for this next exciting phase of my journey. There are lots more exciting things to come!

My next blog post will be in a month, but keep an eye on my socials, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest for more regular post!

Life’s Little Things Luscious Lemon Drizzle Cake

One of Life’s Little Thing’s that brings me a lot of happiness is food. Especially food that brings back memories of a happy time, place or a person. When I was a little girl, my Nanny used to make the best Lemon Drizzle cake! I remember her making it for me when I was poorly to cheer me up and I remember everyone fighting for the crunchy, tangy edges of the cake because they were the best bits. There are so many happy memories attached to Lemon Drizzle Cake for me that whenever I make it or eat it, I can’t help but smile and think about my Nanny. For this blog post I wanted to bring you a recipe, so what better recipe as we begin to leave spring and enter summer than Life’s Little Things Luscious Lemon Drizzle Cake.

What you will need to make Lemon Drizzle Cake

1 Lemon
6 oz Self Raising Flour
6 oz Caster Sugar
3 Eggs
6 oz Butter
1/2 tsp Baking Powder
Icing Sugar

Ingredients for Life’s Little Things Luscious Lemon Drizzle Cake

Equipment

Bowl
Scales
Electric Handmixer
Sieve
Cake Tin
Fine Grater

Step 1

After weighing out your ingredients, cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl with the electric handmixer. Then mix in the eggs. Turn on the oven to 180 degrees C.

Mix the sugar, butter and eggs together in a bowl.

Step 2

Sieve and fold in the flour a little at a time until it is completely mixed in. Using a fine grater, grate the zest of the lemon. Sieve in the baking powder and add half of the lemon zest.

Fold in the flour.
Mix in the baking powder and half the lemon zest.

Step 3

In a greased and floured cake tin, evenly pour in your mixture. Put into the middle of a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for about 40 minutes.

Grease and flour a cake tin.
Evenly pour in the mixture.

Step 4

While the cake is cooking, you can make the lemon drizzle. After juicing the lemon into a bowl or jug, start to mix in some icing sugar, a little at a time. I haven’t included an exact measurement for the icing sugar as this part is personal preference. If you want a zingy lemon drizzle cake, then you will want to only add a smaller amount of sugar and have a runnier drizzle. If you want a milder lemon flavour then add more icing sugar and make a thicker drizzle.

Add icing sugar to the lemon juice to make the drizzle.

Step 5

After the cake is cooked, remove from the tin and place on a cooling rack with a tray underneath. While it is still warm, pierce the top of the cake with holes. You could use a fork, skewer or a knife. The knife I used was a bit flat and wide and made the holes in the cake too wide, so I would recommend using a fork or skewer if you have one.

Place the cake on a wire wrack.
Pierce the cake in multiple places.

Step 6

While the cake is still warm, spoon some of the drizzle over the top, making sure it goes into some of the holes you made. Leave it to cool a little bit, then spoon over some more of the drizzle. Repeat this process until all of the drizzle is on the cake. Then sprinkle over the remaining lemon zest.

Spoon on the drizzle while the cake is still warm.
Sprinkle on the remaining lemon zest.

Step 7

Enjoy!

I really enjoyed making Life’s Little Things Luscious Lemon Drizzle Cake. It brought back lots of memories of eating it as a kid with my family and of my Nanny. Maybe Lemon Drizzle Cake isn’t your thing but there is another cake or food that brings you happiness that you could make. Or maybe if you fancy something chocolatey you could check out Life’s Little Things easy, no bake, Cadbury mini egg Easter Chocolate tiffin. I know its not Easter any more, but this still tastes just as good without mini eggs!

See you in 2 weeks for a special blog post. Its will be 6 months since I launched Life’s Little Things, so I wanted to do a little update on how things are going with the blog and the business. To see how this all started you could check out my first 2 posts Happy New Year and Welcome, and A little bit about me. 5 little things for better self care

When I say ‘self care’ I’m not talking about choosing better shampoo or how often we should brush our teeth. I am talking about taking care of our emotional and mental wellbeing. This past year has been a really tough one for us all and I think it has highlighted vulnerabilities and strengths we may never have thought we had when having to deal with life during a global pandemic. For me it has highlighted how important it is to slow down and focus on the little things in life and making sure you look after yourself. So for this blog post, Life’s Little things brings you 5 little things for better self care.

5 little things for better self care
5 little things for better self care

Get enough sleep

Since becoming a Mum I have really come to learn and appreciate the importance of sleep! When we have gone through rough sleep patches of disturbed nights and being up with one of the kids, in the worst times I didn’t feel like myself at all. My mood would be very low and I literally couldn’t think straight. I would need a nap like the kids just to make it to the end of the day!

According to the NHS an adult needs around 8 hours of good quality sleep a night

Having a nice relaxing bedtime routine can really help with a good nights sleep. You could do things like make a ‘to do’ list and jot down all those stray thoughts that always occur just as you are getting ready to go to sleep. By getting them down on paper, you won’t need to think about them! Other ideas are listening to some relaxing music, or doing some relaxing yoga. The one recommendation I always struggle with is avoiding smartphones and tablets an hour before bed. But I am going to try harder to not work so late and give myself time to unwind before bed to help get a better nights sleep.

Getting enough sleep not only boosts your mental health and wellbeing but research shows it even boosts your immunity! After the past year, having good immunity can only be a good thing. Something as simple as getting more sleep is so good for you, so snuggle up and sweet dreams!

Talk

An article on mentalhealth.org.uk says that talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health, and can help you feel supported if you have a problem. So many times I will chew a problem over and over in my head. As soon as I talk to someone about it though, I feel so much better! Do you find that? Many times whoever I am talking to will then say they have had the same problem or worries. Just talking to someone and knowing you’re not alone in your thoughts and feelings is a great way to take care of yourself. Whether it is through text, over the phone, FaceTime or getting out for a walk with a friend, get talking.

You time

When I talk about you time, I don’t mean time on your own so you can get the housework done. I mean proper YOU time, where you do something for YOU and only YOU. Whether that is going out for a walk, a trip to the beach to have an ice cream by yourself. Maybe take yourself out for lunch and a little bit of shopping. You could set aside a little time each week to learn a new hobby. Or just relax, read a book or watch your favourite programme. Just because YOU want to.

Being a Mum to 2 young children, a lot of my time is spent doing things for others. While I don’t mind doing things for my family, every now and then it is really important that I give myself a break and do something for me. It gives me time to refresh and re-energise. I am a better Mum, Wife and person when I return.

Escapism

There is so much going on in the world. We have the news and social media constantly at our fingertips telling us the good, the bad and the ugly all the time. I love nothing more than a bit of escapism every now and then to get away from it all. I love getting lost in a good book or engrossed in a film. I’ll admit, when things get tough I normally turn to a Disney film, or my favourite tv programme, Friends. It’s even better if you know what you are watching really well because just for a little bit you can completely switch off your brain and not even have to think! Or I love putting on some of my favourite music and singing along like no one is listening and dancing around like no one is watching.

It’s ok to ask for help

Something that is really really important to remember about self care is that you don’t have to know all the answers. You don’t have to know exactly how is best to look after your mental and emotional wellbeing, or why you feel the way you do, or exactly how you can make yourself feel better. You don’t have to know everything about how to bring up kids, or how to deal with a global pandemic or just deal with life in general. There are many places, organisations and people that you can reach out to for help.

Should you feel you need to reach out for help or advice please check out the list of numbers available at mind.org, nhs.uk or here is a selection below.

Taking a bit of time to look after yourself whenever you need it, will not only benefit you but also those around you. These are just 5 little things for better self care, but there are plenty more things that you could do. 5 little things we can all do for Earth Day 2021

The 22nd April 2021 is Earth Day! Earth Day happens every year and helps to raise awareness about the protection and conservation of our Planet. It is a day we can make changes in our lives to help the environment and our Planet. Not sure what to do to celebrate Earth Day? Life’s Little Things brings you 5 little things we can all do for Earth Day 2021.

5 little things we can all do for Earth Day 2021.

1. Make a food swap

In my previous blog post, 5 little things we can all do to help the environment, I talked about avoiding products with palm oil in them. I will be writing a more in-depth post about palm oil in the coming months, but in a nut shell, the production of palm oil is absolutely devastating rainforests. It’s destroying trees, animals habitats and is endangering species. So many of our everyday food items at home contain palm oil and we don’t even realise!

For Earth Day 2021 you could choose to swap one of your food items at home for a palm oil free alternative. I chose peanut butter for our first swap. We swapped from a supermarket own brand of peanut butter which contained palm oil to Pip and Nut Peanut Butter. The new product is more expensive but is less oily, absolutely delicious, and most importantly has no palm oil! Our next swap is going to be from a supermarket own brand of sunflower spread to butter that contains no palm oil.

2. Make a household product swap

Many items around our homes are made of plastic or materials that can’t be recycled, don’t biodegrade and will sit in landfill for hundreds of years once we are finished with them. As much as I would love to, we can’t afford to just go out and replace everything in our homes for eco friendly substitutes in one go. Like many people we have budget constraints. But what we are going to start doing is as and when we need to replace items we will be looking for environmentally friendly replacements.

This week I came across a great little shop online called My little Eco Shop. I found environmentally friendly bamboo make up brushes that were half the price of other plastic ones that I had found! I also bought some bees wax food wrap. This is something I have been wanting to try for a long time as I hate having to use cling film to wrap up food. Is there anything that you need to buy soon that you could get an environmentally friendly version of?

3. Unsubscribe from junk mail. Go paperless!

Do you get letters, magazines or bank statements in the post that you don’t read or can view online? A great way to help cut down on paper waste is to go paperless. Although paper can be recycled, the demand for paper has a very damaging effect to our planet. Every year more that 75 million football fields worth of forest is cleared to be created into paper.*2 This amount of deforestation has a very damaging effect on our planet. Trees help reduce the effects of global warming by taking in carbon dioxide and giving out oxygen that we breathe. Unsubscribing to unnecessary junk mail that comes through your door is a great way to help save paper and trees.

*2 Statistic from https://paperontherocks.com/2018/11/28/environmental-impact-of-deforestation/

4. Shop Local, support small businesses

Something I have been very keen to start this year is shopping more locally. By that I don’t just mean my local supermarkets, but local small businesses. Not only does this support local businesses in my area, but also reduces my carbon footprint. I started off with a few small changes, like buying some of our meat at a local butchers. I slowly increased it so that we now buy all of our meat from our local butchers. Then week by week I have been adding other items like locally sourced free range eggs, milk and cheese. This can be a difficult thing to do as many of the items are more expensive than what is available in a supermarket, but what I have been finding is that we are getting much better quality for the money we are paying. If your budget doesn’t allow for it, that’s ok! Just do something small and make one change as and when you can.

5. Walk or cycle instead of taking the car

Research has found that in the first 5 minutes of a car journey, a vehicle can emit up to twice as much pollution as it would once the vehicles pollution control system has warmed up.*3 In 2019, 34% of carbon dioxide emission in the UK came from transport alone and was the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions. Are there any short journeys that you take in the car that you could walk or cycle instead? Not only is it better for you to walk or cycle as it is great exercise but it saves you money and also helps the planet!

Thats it! 5 little things we can all do for Earth Day 2021! All of these are only small actions. You could just do 1 or 2 of them or all 5! Or could you make some bigger changes in your life? Sir David Attenborough said at the end of the documentary ‘Extinction: The Facts’, ‘If we make the right decisions at this critical moment, we can safeguard our planet’s ecosystems, it’s extraordinary biodiversity and all its inhabitants. What happens next, is up to every one of us.’ If all of us make many little changes in our lives, it could add up to some big changes for our planet!

See you all in 2 weeks for the next blog post! In the mean time check out the Life’s Little Things Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest accounts for more posts.
